DIY Rhinestone Bowl
So, today I did my first DIY project for the first time in a long time. I stumbled across this blog through Pinterest. I fell in love with the glitter vase. I just HAD to have one, or even better--make my own! I thought about it for few days, and today being a super-lazy Sunday. I asked my mom if she wanted to come with me to Michael's and give me some 'mommy-input' in my crazy shopping habits. She did want to come. Once we were there, we had another DIY inspiration--a couple of silver gems/rhinestones. You'll see what we did with my DIY projects below.
First of all, let me tell you what you would need if you ever wanted to do this for yourself too!
Two glass bowls (you could use jars, vases, or whatever your heart desires!)
Foam brushes (to brush on the glue, you could use something else.)
Glue (I used Aleene's Clear Gel Tacky Glue, although I'm not sure how effective this glue is or how to deal if water washes it away...will keep this side updated!)
Fine glitter powder
Silver gems/rhinestones
Wash out the bowls, you never know what dirt would be on them that would just be...nasty and ruin your adhesive.
I did the glitter bowl first, for this one I picked the smaller bowl (by the way, those bowls were only $2.50 each at Michael's! Pretty good deal, I know!) to do this one. I wanted to test the powder a bit before doing the whole thing and failing so I started at the bottom. I spread out the glue with the foam brushes, leaving a good amount of glue on the bottom then immediately poured a lot of glitter in, better too much than too little--you can always pour them back out on a sheet of brown paper and put it back in the bottle, which is exactly what I did, probably a less messier that way too.
I was definitely satisfied with the quality of the glue and the glitter--so I went ahead and did the same thing for the whole bowl.
Hey, Ani approves! |
There were few smears where I missed with the glue, I tried to retouch, but it didn't come out good--I just simply waited until it was dry and retouched it, much better!
Next, I did the bejeweled bowl which took me a really long time. I was distracted and had dinner. This whole process took me around five hours, probably not a thing for non-patient people to do. This takes a load of patience to do!
This process was crazy simple, I just glued the glass one strip of around 2 inches a time.
Although, after the first strip--you'll need the strip to completely dry and upright (not tilted, or the jewels would just fall off the side). It needed to dry so when I stick the jewels next to it, it'll support the wet jewels (duh?) so I sped up the drying a little by using the low setting on my mom's blow dryer. Once I got going, there were no problems. I stopped once in a while to blow dry the jewels, just in case!
By this point, I was extremely bored, but it already looked gorgeous and I knew I had to finish this so I started few episodes of LOST and kept going.
Few hours later, ALMOST DONE! I don't think I've ever been so excited to actually finish something this glamourous! I finished this right in time for a new episode of The Walking Dead!
Yeah, that's me with the finished products. I was so exhausted after doing the bejeweled bowl!
Definitely do the glitter bowl if you want an easy way to decorate a vase or glass, but if you want to take it to the next level and have few hours to spare--do the bejeweled bowl. It's both worth it! They look so good in my room right now just hanging out.
